Common Misconceptions

The popular media (news, television and movie industry) have created many misconceptions regarding the public's view of Greek Life. This section is dedicated to hopefully clarifying some of the common misunderstandings about fraternities.

Animal House, Old School, GREEK and other movies and T.V. Shows

The movie, "Animal House" is considered by many to be a classic film about rowdy college students in a fraternity. This movie depicts "frat" guys drinking excessively, pulling various pranks and stunts, and overall being gentlemen of bad character. Following suit in depicting fraternities in a bad light is the more recent movie, "Old School", with Will Ferrell. The ABC Family TV Series "GREEK" is another show which depicts excessive drinking, hazing and pranks. One of the aspects that the show GREEK does represent accurately is the dedication of Greek organizaitons to philanthropic work.

These Misconceptions are Detremental

The closest thing most people are exposed to regarding Fraternities and Sororities is what is display on the big screen, or on the television screen in your home. These common misconceptions about Greek Life are detremental to fraternities such as Sigma Chi. We are exposed to more stringent rules and reguations for how we operate because of these things.

Slowly but surely, the Iota Tau Chapter has been changing these views held by faculty, staff and students at St. Thomas. We understand that it's not their fault for seeing us in a bad light. Through philanthropic work, focus on education and bettering the environment and community around us, we have displayed to others what it truely means to be part of this wonderful organization. Every semester, it is guaranteed that pledges will approach the brothers and state that what we do and what we stand for is nowhere near what their mental picture is of a fraternity.
